That's right folks, it's WORLD NUTELLA DAY!

What, you ask? World NUTELLA Day? What's that?

Well, my friends, it is the inspired brainchild of my lovely expat pal Sara over at Ms. Adventures in Italy, who has kindly enlisted my help in co-hosting this groundbreaking, earth-shattering, nothing less than simply life-changing EVENT.

Who can remember the first time they were allowed to eat chocolate for breakfast?

Nutella is more than just a "chocolaty hazelnut spread," it is a way of life. From childhood memories to oozing hot crepes, from breakfasts on vacation, to free-spooning sessions on the couch, Nutella is present in the memories of many of the children and grown-up children in the world.

And it doesn't have its own holiday.

We're about to change that.

Sara from Ms. Adventures in Italy and Shelley from At Home in Rome solemnly declare February 6th "World Nutella Day" - a day to celebrate, to get creative with, and most importantly, to EAT Nutella.

How to participate:
  1. Make a recipe using Nutella. Eat Nutella with a spoon. A big one. Make art with Nutella. Wax poetic about Nutella. Cuddle with Nutella. Re-live your first experience eating Nutella. Offer Nutella as a sacrifice. Tell us your favorite story about those fabled Nutella glasses. Have a Nutella-eating contest or a Nutella party!

  2. Take pictures, upload a video, and blog about it from now until February 6th, 2007. Posts on February 6th are strongly encouraged.

  3. Email nutelladay [at] nutelladay [dot] com. with Subject: Nutella Day and include your name, your site name, and your permalink/URL by February 6th, 2007. You can also attach one 100x100 pixel photo of your dish-etc. to include in the roundup. We'll be posting the round-up on the 7th of February.

  4. In your post please include the Nutella Day participant button below and have it point to this post or to www.nutelladay.com

  5. Tag/categorize your post with "Nutella Day."

Don't have a blog? Don't let that stop you!! There are more ways to share!
  • Tips: Send us your tips, usage and ways to enjoy Nutella at: tips[at] nutelladay*dot* com and we’ll post them on the Nutella Day site!

Do not, I repeat: DO NOT, accept cheap imitations:

"Clever," indeed! Nothing compares to Italy's own Nutella.

Accept only the real deal, even if your supermarket, like mine yesterday, only has it in 30g snack packs with little white plastic thingys you can use to "spread" it (yeah, right, we know it's just for shoveling it directly into your mouth!):

Look, people, if I am brave enough to publish a silly self-portrait posing with a baby Nutella in order to promote this online event, then surely you can join in the fun too...

Now get out there and prepare your World Nutella Day entry!

Woo-hoo!!! We're off! I'm going to post some self-deprecating pictures after I raid the supermarkets today. Beware!

Thank God for that! Because as anyone who reads my blog knows, I do NOT publish pictures of myself. That means that I am making some serious sacrifices for the good of WND!! Nutella lovers, unite!!!

I'm happy to join you 2, back here in France ;-) Do I have to publish a silly self-portrait too ? ;-)))
Can this Nutella day last for a couple of days ....?

Too funny! Hopefully I'll remember to join in!

When I first moved to Italy, I went into major nutella overdose mode. My roommates and I would sit around eating it off of spoons (at first we used bread and fruit, but then found it more efficient to just skip the vehicle all together).

I hope nutella is giving you some freebies for all this promotion you're giving them. :)

there is NOTHING better, did you hear me? N-O-T-H-I-N-G BETTER than a hot cornetto dripping with nutella.

good. god.

did you know that many people think nutella is swiss? i posted about it, just to clarify things...i never do this, as it reeks of self-promotion, but it goes with the theme...fools better recognize! ;)

by the way shelley, how did you get that link into your comment?

Look! The momentum is gaining!

Isma, you can post a silly picture. Or not. It's totally up to you! That's the fun of it, it's really whatever you want... I still haven't figured out what I'm going to uncover for "the big day." The resident chef (Ale) said he has to come up with a special recipe...

Beth: Remember! Remember!

Jul: I've never eaten it off a spoon before but I think I am definitely in the minority on that one. No freebies, but if it goes well this year we should ask Ferrero for prizes for next year, how 'bout one a them 5 KILO jars??

Tracie: It's all good. I am ok with self-promotion if it's for a good cause. ;-) Sent you an email with info on how to make a hyperlink in the comments field.

I don't own a digital camera (yet) so there will be no photos of me with the wonderful joy that is Nutella.

I fully support this fantastic holiday!

"oooh, Mummy! I want that chocolate with bread! Pleeease?" 3 seconds after soup, toast, salami, cheese and tomato, after seeing this post!

well now I love that stuff. Not so sure I can go nuts on it because it's just all too addictive.. The kids here eat jars of it in an out of control manner and of course that stuff isn't cheap!

And we only have the ugly jar here. Now small samples, no jars to keep... I'll have to search a while and see. keeping an open mind on an addiction!

p.s. if I participate you might have to send me to rehab! ;-)

You are too funny. I'm in! I'm thinking Nutella cupcakes for my office. I know Finny is going to love this.

I'm all over this idea like...well...like me on a jar of Nutella!

I reckon I'll have to at least make a picture of my World Cup soccer ball shaped Nutella jar that I use to hold my spare change.

World Nutella Week is my dream come true.

FINNY LOVES THIS!

Seriously, I already have some lewd photos of me with my Holiday Tub of Nutella. They're inappropriate so I will have to *think* about posting them.

I have a white trash recipe that I will post up though, I'm pretty sure.

I feel like I need to be extra creative with this, though - since I've pledged my eternal love to this thing.

Would rolling naked in a tub of nutella be a good way to celebrate the day? hehehehehehehe!

I will happy, happy, happy to join you and Sara in the yummy celebration (I promise to keep my clothes on)!

Yum, Nutella. It's right up there on my list with vegemite. Nutella or vegemite on toast for breakfast? Just not both together, even my tatse buds couldn't do that.

I will be hosting a World Nutella Day party here in Houston. I was Nutella for Halloween in 2000. This may be up there with Talk Like a Pirate Day in my book.

Um... what if I prefer Crema Novi? It is NOT a cheap imitation and MUCH better than Nutella in my opinion. More hazelnuts and no hydrogenated oils. Or the handmade stuff I got in Padova. Which was expensive and I still have some...
I mean, i GUESS I could make an exception for Nutella, ;-)
OOH! Idea. I can do a "Nutella" tasting. Where I try the same recipe with Crema Novi, The handmade Padova stuff, AND Nutella! That counts!!!!

Oh also, I can't add buttons to my blog, I'm not allowed. But consider me a participant nonetheless. :-)

Love! Love! Nutella love!

Won't respond to everyone individually cuz it would take up too much space but: Nutella Lovers Unite!

Can't help on the last two, though:

Elizabeth: This is so cool. You were Nutella for Halloween? That picture MUST go in our Flickr pool!

Tina: See how writing comments can bring on ideas? This is a good one. A blind taste test. That DEFINITELY counts. You'll have to document it all... a video would be the best, but if not take photos!
